July 29, 2008

This morning we took a gondola up the mountain and walked down. It was a 4 mile hike, but thankfully, most of it was downhill. The view from the mountain was really beautiful.

It took us about 2 1/2 hours to make it down. I knew I had a blister on my big toe, but was afraid to take my shoes off. While we were on top of the mountain in the gift shop, Patrick started talking to the sales lady. Turns out she had lived in Florida for 30 years and retired last year to Steamboat Springs. She told us about a nice place with hot springs that's not in the middle of town like the others. It's called Strawberry Farms Hot Springs and is outside of town. She gave us directions and we decided to go there after the hike. So, with blisters and pain in my legs from walking down hill for several hours, I liked the idea of soaking in hot water for a while. We got a map, followed her directions out of town and then the road stops. Actually, the pavement stops. I then drove 2 miles on dirt and gravel uphill a steep mountain. And I do mean STEEP. During winter you can only get there if you have chains for your tires. But even then I wouldn't try. I'm driving along and there is no other traffic. Finally, a car, then another. Patrick said the people in both cars are smiling, that must be a good sign. After 2 miles of going 15 miles an hour, we arrive. It's a parking lot and a little house where you pay for your ticket. So I pay, and the guy tells us where to go. Downhill we walk and there are the hot springs. And it's beautiful there. They are in a small valley, surrounded by nature and trees. There are 4 main pools. The hot spring comes out of the mountain above the pools and there is also a stream with fish. By mixing these two naturally occuring waters, they created paradise. There is a hot house where the steam of the hot spring runs through a little stone house. The water then flows into a pool where it gets mixed with the cold water from the stream (minus the fish). From there it flows down into another pool where more cold water is mixed in. So, all pools have different temperatures, from burning your feet (yes, I tried!) to freezing cold. It was sooo beautiful there!

After a couple of hours we left, had dinner in town and went back to the hotel. That's when I noticed the sunburn. So not only did I suffer a big blister on both of my big toes, I also have a painful sunburn. But even so, it was a great day!

Patrick wanted to spend some time in Steamboat Springs, and that's where we are now. After arriving here we went to Downtown and walked around and checked out the shops. Actually, that's all we did today - drive here and walk around Steamboat Springs!

Today was a real R&R day! We drove into Denver to spend some time at this great book store called The Tattered Cover. First we went to Cherry Creek Mall because the book store was just across the street from there. But they moved and so we drove to the new adress. The Store is now in an old Theater. They left the Theater as it was and just put books everywhere. There are books on the stage, in the pit, the entrance hall, and everywhere else. It's really cool and interesting. The Theater also has a Restaurant called Encore. We had lunch there, then spend several hours in the Book Store. We went back to Longmont and had dinner at the Pump House Brewery and of course, we had ice cream at the Snow Mountain Creamery for the last time this trip.

We drove to Estes Park this morning, where we met Larissa. She was driving in from Cheyenne, Wyoming. We had breakfast together, then went in to Rocky Mountain National Park. First Larissa and Patrick went on a 2 1/2 hour hike while I was sitting comfortably in my car, reading a new book. Then we drove up to about 12300 feet to the Tundra. This is the highest point in the Park and it's very cold up there.

There is always snow in the Tundra and Patrick brought back a snow ball to the car.

While we were up there, it started raining, but at this elevation it turned into sleet. At least this time Patrick had a jacket and didn't freeze like last time.

After we left the Park we had dinner at the Sundeck Restaurant where I had trout again. I think this was the 5th time I had trout on this vacation. We sat and chatted for a while, then Larissa had to drive back to Wyoming. Patrick and I had Ice Cream again at our favorite place in Longmont and went back to the hotel.

July 25, 2008

Last night we decided it's time for a day out, so today we slept in, and just drove over to Estes Park. We had lunch there, walked around a bit and visited the yarn store. Patrick likes going there - obviously not for the yarn, but the owner has two dogs in the shop that he likes to play with. So I had time to browse and buy . . . stuff. While we were in the store, there was a thunderstorm but when we left it had cleared up. We drove to Rocky Mountain National Park

and to Sprague Lake. It's just a small lake with a path around it. It's level there and only 1/2 mile around. We walked the path, took some pictures and enjoyed the view.

Patrick likes the little chipmunks and they are so used to people, they come really close.

The Park is a really beautiful place. We left the Park and drove back to Longmont.

There we decided that ice cream is a good dinner choice, so we had plenty at the Snow Mountain Creamery. They make the best ice cream I have ever eaten. Patrick thinks we should go there every day while we are here. Not every day for dinner, but for dessert.

We left Durango this morning and drove through the mountains. We stopped at Molas Pass which is 10910 feet high. It is so unbelievably beautiful and serene up there.

We also stopped in Ouray. Ouray is my favorite little town in Colorado. We had lunch there, I read the local (funny) paper and we walked around a little. As I mentioned last time we drove that route, the road to Ouray is not for the faint of heart - or people who WANT to die! The road has a white line to mark the edge, at least most of the time. Thats it. There is no shoulder, no guard rail, just a drop down into oblivion. One wrong move, and you're history. And I'm not kidding here, there is nothing to keep you on that road, other than the will to survive! But when you get to Ouray, it's really worth it. It's a beautiful little town.

For dinner we stopped in Frisco, had italian food (again) at a place called "Tuscato" and then went back on the road. We're staying 4 nights in Longmont, CO because it is close to Rocky Mountain National Park. Patrick wants to do some serious "Nature Walks" there, and I'm sure after the pain from my last "Nature Walk" has somewhat lessened, I'll be happy to go with him.

July 23, 2008

This morning we drove over to Mesa Verde where I got into trouble. I think I need to explain something first. I understand the reason behind speed limits, I really do. But they are so . . . stringent and restricting. So sometimes I kinda go a little faster than I should. Just a little. So, we were driving through Mesa Verde, which is, of course a National Park. With Park Rangers. In big cars with flashing lights on top. Well, they only flash their lights when they chase someone. And sometimes there is more than one Ranger chasing. Sometimes there are two Rangers in two cars with flashing lights. So anyway . . . . . there I was driving through the Park, which is very clearly marked when it comes to the speed they want you to drive. I was driving behind this lady in an SUV, Patrick and I were talking, I was a little faster than I should have been and I completely missed a sign that says: Speed Limit 25 miles. And that's where the Rangers and the flashing lights appeared. So I (and the lady in front of me) pulled over and waited. So, angry Ranger comes out of his car (the one with the flashing lights) and comes up to me. He tells me what the speed limit was and that I was way too fast. I agreed with him and apologized. Cause that's what you do when you do something stupid. Meanwhile, there was another Ranger behind him (and therefore behind me). But the Ranger only gave me a warning about driving too fast and told me to watch the speed limit from now on. Which I then did all the way through the Park. I expected (and deserved) a ticket, but he was nice enough to let me go. After that we drove (the speed limit) to the Cliff Dwellings, where Patrick made me go on a Nature Walk.

The "walk" if we want to call it that, was 3 miles long, most of it straight up. Oh, and there was the one part where the path ended in front of a big rock with a sign poining up. What do they think I am, a Mountain Goat? So up I went on that big rock that had a small whole in the side which was supposed to be a step. The path also led through a small opening with a Boulder on top of it. I figured the Boulder was there many years already and why should the thing collapse just as I walk under it.

When we were almost done and on top of the Mesa, a thunderstorm rolled in, but it never actually came close enough to be dangerous. But I still wanted to get off the mountain soon. We finally made it back to the car in less than three hours. It was a strenuous climb, but after my heart rate went down below Heart Attack/Stroke level, I of course had to admit that I liked it. And the view from the top of the Mountain was absolutely beautiful!

We drove back to Durango, parked the car at the hotel and took the trolley back to the downtown area. Patrick wanted to watch a movie and we saw "The Dark Knight". I'm not a Batman Fan but it was a good movie and I really liked it. Then we had dinner at Mutu's again.
