July 22, 2008

After leaving Roswell this morning, we drove about 2 hours in a straight line. Well, there was actually one curve in the road. :) But it was beautiful there and we saw lots of horses, cows, deer and a turtle. On that same road we also saw a gas station with the highest gas price I have seen so far: $4.49! After the straight road we then came up towards hills and mountains and the drive wasn't quite as monotone anymore. We had lunch in Albuquerque, NM at Landry's. Funny, we are in Albuquerque and eat at a New Orleans Restaurant. After lunch we headed north and as we're almost on top of a mountain, at about 7000 feet there is this thunderstorm over us with high winds, lightning and so much rain, the wind shield wipers couldn't handle it. And then the hail started, the car was swimming (downhill), and it was soooo not cool! But it only lasted a couple minutes, just long enough to clean the dead bugs off the wind shield.

I also filled up the car at only $3.71, the cheapest price so far. Both Patrick and I liked the landscape of the area, dry and arid and all flat. And then.....

....we entered COLORADO!!! WooHoo!!! As soon as we came into Colorado, there was the river at the border and the landscape turned green and lush and beautiful. Durango is just a couple of miles inside Colorado, and we're staying here 2 nights. After driving all day we took the trolley into town and walked around the downtown area. We found Mutu's, a little Italian Restaurant that had excellent food and decent prices. We walked around a little longer and then took the trolley back to the hotel.

July 21, 2008

Patrick wanted to go to White Sands again. For those of you who don't know, White Sands is a National Park where Gypsum Sand was deposited a long time ago and is now moved by the wind into Dunes. It's very hot there but also very beautiful. We were there once before and then as now, the complete stillness of the place surprised me. We took a little Nature Trail through the Dunes and after that Patrick went out there by himself. But the heat got to both of us and we were glad when we left the park. We had enough to drink, but it's just extremely hot there and we got sunburned just from walking the little Nature Trail.

On the way back to Roswell we noticed this beautiful church on a hill top and stopped there in the town of Mescalero. It is in the middle of the Apache Reservation and was once a Mission Church. It is now being renovated. The inside was interesting, because the Jesus behind the Altar was Apache. So were the 12 Apostles. But I think if you want to convert a people you have to give them someone just like them.

We also stopped in Ruidoso again. It was once a small mountain town on the Apache Reservation, but is now a major tourist attraction with several Casinos and lots of chain hotels. The old part of town is still quaint and has nice little shops. That's the part we liked. We had dinner in Ruidoso and then drove back to Roswell. It was a nice trip. Back in Roswell we went to our favorite Frozen Custard Shop.

After leaving the hotel this morning, I filled up the car again and we headed back out on the road. Of course, this is Texas, so there was no short supply of oil derricks. We had lunch in a small oil town and listened to the oil men talk about their day and what's going on in their world. We also stopped at a Meteor Crater Site and walked around a bit. It was a nice break from all the driving.

We made it to New Mexico in the afternoon, and because we crossed over into another time zone, we gained another hour. Patrick wanted to visit Carlsbad Caverns again and this time I went down there with him. Considering I am claustrophobic, I am very proud of myself for actually going into a cave!

In the evening the bats are flying out of one of the caves there and when we were here last time, we had to leave before the flight because of thunderstorms. This time, we finally saw hundreds of thousands of bats come out of the cave and fly away. Unfortunatly, it is not allowed to take pictures at the time of flight. But it was beautiful! Or as Patrick said: AWESOME! By the time we left it was dark. I had already made reservations at a hotel in Roswell, NM und we drove through the prairie in the dark. There were parts where my headlights were the only light. I drove in complete darkness, no other cars around and no lights from anywhere. It was beautiful! While I drove, Patrick looked out at the stars in the night sky. He was amazed at how many he saw and the constellations he recognized. It was almost 11pm when we finally arrived at the hotel and we were both very tired. We drove 454 miles today and had so much fun!

Leider durfte man keine Fotos machen.

Patrick and I decided to make a little detour to the Stock Yards in Fort Worth today. We spent several hours there, saw a cattle drive, looked at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and checked out Billy Bob's Texas. We walked around the Stock Yards in balmy (yeah, right!) 97 degree weather and had lunch at H3 Ranch. The "H" in the name stands for Hunter Brothers and of course I asked the waiter if we get a discount for having the same name as the owner. Unfortunately, we didn't. Oh, well. Patrick had ice cream in one of the little shops and after that we went over to see if there were any animals in the Yard. There were only a couple horses and the Longhorns from the cattle drive. We went back on I-20 and our next stop was Weatherford just a couple miles west of Fort Worth. There we drove to the police station where we met a certain cop who worked at MacDill AFB before he retired and moved to Weatherford. Now he prefers donuts and handcuffs to the discipline of the Military : ).
Tonight we're staying in Abilene, TX. After checking into the hotel I asked at the front desk if there is a good italian restaurant, and the janitor gave us directions to "Little Italy". The restaurant was behind a gas station in a strip mall and didn't look like much. But the food was soooo good! The atmosphere was good and the service was great. So, if you're ever going to be in Abilene, TX, go to "Little Italy" - it's a nice little restaurant with great food and decent prices.

This morning we left New Orleans and went back on the Interstate. But instead of staying on I-10, we (actually, Patrick did) decided to go up and then go to I-20. I think the directions were: go up in Louisiana and then make a left into Texas. Well, I'm good with accurate directions, so here we are in Texas! :) We're staying in Lindale/Tyler tonight. It's less than 100 Miles to Dallas from here and it will probably take all day tomorrow to drive through Texas. In case you didn't know, Texas is BIG. I did not get gas this morning when we left New Orleans but then of course I forgot that the Interstate out of New Orleans is mostly bridges over Bayous, Swamps, Rivers and other wet areas. So, no gas stations for miles and miles. Well, it would be kinda hard to put a gas station on a bridge. Then I did not want to go to the first gas station after the swamps and waited for the second one. There are signs everywhere: next service station 36 miles. It's not like they are close together. I took the second gas station and the choice was $4.05 or $4.09 per gallon. I choose the first and just put a couple of gallons in. Later I went to another gas station in Louisiana and filled up the car for $3.92 a gallon. I was happy about that until I started wondering: When did we start thinking that $3.92 is a good price for a gallon of gas??? Anyway, we arrived at the hotel (after 436 miles) and had dinner at the Cracker Barrel. Patrick loves that place, southern boy that he is! And he eats like a horse! That child can put away massive amounts of food - but then, he is a teenager (aka a bottomless pit).

So, we left Alabama this morning, and drove through Mississippi and into Louisiana (152 miles). We arrived here around 11am and parked the car at the Hotel (which is 2 blocks from Bourbon Street), then walked through the French Quarter. Or maybe I should tell the truth: We ATE our way through the French Quarter! But that was the reason for our stay here, so there is really no reason to pretend otherwise. Lunch was at "Bubba Gump" - not just because it seems to be Patrick's favorite movie, but also because they have good Seafood Etouffe. Of course we had the beignets at "Cafe Du Monde", no visit to New Orleans would be complete without it. We had dinner at "Bourbon House". And in between stuffing our faces with Louisiana food, we also had time (imagine that!) to walk around the French Quarter and see St. John's Cathedral. So now we're all tired from the heat (and maybe all the food?) and we'll call it a day.

July 16, 2008

On the road again.... WooHoo!

It's finally time to go on our annual trip to..... well, wherever the road will take us. This morning we had breakfast with Drew at the Village Inn in Tampa, then at 8:45am Patrick and I hit the road. First we had some problems with traffic and rain, but only for the first half hour. Then it was overcast, we had hardly any traffic to deal with, and we made it to our first stop in Daphne, Alabama at 4:45pm. Of course we crossed into a different time zone so it's actually 3:45pm here - we have an extra hour! I drove 507 Miles today, we got gas before we left Tampa ($3.93) and again somewhere in the pan handle in Florida ($3.98). Today's trip was soooo boring, it's not even funny. I think the Interstate out of Florida is only surpassed by driving through Kansas in how boring the whole thing is. We saw trees today - lots and lots of trees, then some cows, more trees, some horses and - you guessed it: more trees. And all this on a very flat road. Good grief, this was a boring day! But I knew it, of course, and did not look forward to today's part of our vacation. But one good thing happened: We're out of Florida!

We've been to this Hotel before and there was a nice little place nearby called "Nautilus" where we ate last time. It was mostly sea food and it was fried, but very good. So we walked over there today and the place is now "D'olive Bay" and is supposed to be Italian. Well, it was a big disappointment. The food was mediocre at best. After dinner we sat on the balcony at the hotel for drinks and (in Patrick's case) cookies.
